Garbage At Lamartine Avenue Croton Trail Entrance In Yonkers

Garbage Remains on Yonkers Nature Trail

by Ardina Seward

On July 24th, 2017, SW Hamlet Hub posted a report about litter at the entrance to the Old Croton Aqueduct trail on Lamartine Avenue.

As of July 28th, not only does the garbage remain, but there has been additional dumping added to the pile.
http://news.hamlethub.com/swyonkers/life/2113-illegal-dumping-on-yonkers-aqueduct-trail
As of July 28th, not only does the garbage remain, but there has been additional dumping added to the pile.
Directly across from the pile, graffiti artists have tagged a fence with new displays.  When the tire pile fills with water, it attracts mosquitoes that infiltrate the yards of the neighboring houses.
The rotting food attracts rodents to the area and a problem that once started as an eyesore is becoming a growing environmental issue.

PRESS RELEASE: Liam McLaughlin endorsed by League of Conservation Voters

YONKERS, NY – City Council President Liam McLaughlin continues to build a commanding lead in his bid for re-election which was endorsed by the New York State League of Conservation Voters today.

The NYLCV is the only statewide environmental organization in New York that fights for clean water, clean air, renewable energy and open space through political action and is non-partisan, pragmatic and effective.

In granting the endorsement, Josh Klainberg, senior vice-president of the New York State League of Conservation Voters wrote, “NYLCV and its partners in the environmental policy arena believe that voters [in Yonkers] are determined to make the environment a top voting issue in 2017. We look forward to working with Council President McLaughlin for a greater and greener New York!”
Council President McLaughlin has burnished impressive environmental credentials during his time on the City Council, where he serves as chair of the Environmental Protection & Policy Committee.
He has authored and passed numerous pieces of legislation including creating a director of sustainability and an environmental purchasing program to green the City’s procurement, creating a Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing program alongside EnergizeNY, creating the City’s “Complete Streets” ordinance and requiring the use of ecofriendly deicing agents on City roads. He also funded important environmental initiatives including a municipal tree study, a recent suggestion by the Green City Advisory Committee.
“My commitment to the environment has not only been through legislation, it has also included the launch of a new anti-litter marketing initiative and ‘Respect Yonkers’ campaign, the anti-litter poster contest and my legislation enacting tough new penalties for littering and dumping and creating litter cameras,” McLaughlin said. “During my time on the Council I have also been a champion for the planning, approval and construction of the Daylighting of the Saw Mill River at each and every phase. All of this has been accomplished working in a bipartisan fashion cooperatively with our Mayor.”
Also on the environmental front, in June of 2016, Council President McLaughlin became one of the first municipal officials to publicly oppose the United States Coast Guard’s recently abandoned proposal to allow for ten new commercial vessel anchorages along our waterfront on the Hudson River. He helped lead the charge by creating the #BantheBarges campaign with Mayor Mike Spano and the Hudson River Waterfront Alliance which garnered over 10,000 public comments in opposition to the plan.
“I’m honored to have partnered with the League of Conservation Voters on many important environmental initiatives and so grateful for their confidence in me. I’d like to thank them for all their help and advice and their noble work in educating the public on how we can leave our planet a little bit better for future generations,” McLaughlin concluded.

CORAZON PINEDA ISAAC, YONKERS 2ND DISTRICT COUNCILWOMAN

Corazon Pineda Isaac obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Long Island University- C.W Post with a Major in Finance. Upon graduating, she began her financial career with one of the largest financial institutions throughout the world, AXA Advisors, where she currently holds the title of Financial Professional and maintains the FINRA Registrations Series 7 and Series 63, as well as Life and Health Insurance licenses.

Being the daughter of Dominican immigrants, she has fully embraced her Latino heritage. At the age of 16, she moved to Westchester with her parents, allowing them to raise their growing family and make Yonkers their permanent home. Taken by the beauty of the City of Hills, Corazon and her family took great pride in being Yonkers residents and she immediately began integrating herself into her community.
Wanting to take a more active role in the political process, she became a Democratic district leader and volunteered on George Latimer's campaign for New York State Senate in 2012. As she became more involved, Corazon became aware of the many needs of her community in southwest Yonkers. She decided that the best way to make a positive change in her community was to be proactive and decisive -- she needed to make the important decision to run for public office, as Yonkers City Council Member in the 2nd District. At 25 years old, Ms. Pineda is one of the youngest elected officials to be elected to the Yonkers City Council.
Corazon has made it her mission to be a real leader. She understands the wide-ranging needs and concerns of her community and the city of Yonkers, and she will dedicate herself to her constituency by providing full, honest, and real representation.

Yonkers Firefighters Union Accused Of Misspending Millions

Tax Watch: Millions in tax dollars misspent by Yonkers firefighters union

by David McKay Wilson

The Yonkers firefighters union has spent more than $10 million in state taxpayer funds over the past five decades in violation of state law.

The money was doled out to Yonkers Fire Department employees for gym memberships, co-payments for medical care and health insurance deductibles. It also was used to sponsor dinner dances, softball tournaments, and evenings to honor retirees or those in the department for 20to 25 years.
***
The tax is a two-percent levy on home-insurance policies written by companies with headquarters outside of New York that brings in an estimated $60 million annually.
***
Use of the money in Yonkers is set by a 1912 law that restricts its use to “the care of indigent and disabled firemen and their families.” Ten percent of thefund in Yonkers is earmarked by the law for Volunteer Firemen’s Home in Hudson.

Ten percent still goes to the Fire Association of the State of New York’s Firemen’s Home, with the state sending those funds to the retirement home directly from Albany.

But for decades, the remaining 90 percent has not been used for the care of indigent and disabled firemen, and their families, a Tax Watch investigation has found.
***
Once retired on disability, a firefighter wouldn’t qualify for funding under the 1912 law because they would be a civilian receiving disability pension payments and no longer be considered a fireman, said McGoey.

“That 1912 law is no longer relevant,” McGoey said. “In the city of Yonkers, there are no indigent and disabled firemen.”

PRESS RELEASE: Yonkers Passes Trash Cam Law

YONKERS, NY – Litterbugs, beware. Yonkers has adopted an ordinance sponsored by Council President Liam McLaughlin dubbed the ‘Litter Free Streets Act of 2017’ which will allow for the use of recorded images as evidence of littering or dumping.

The item was passed at a special meeting of the City Council

“The Litter Free Streets Act will help make our City cleaner and is the next step in our Citywide anti-litter campaign,” McLaughlin said. “Today we’re sending a message that if you dump or litter in Yonkers, we will catch you and will we will prosecute you. I’m proud to continue working with Mayor Spano and my colleagues on the Council Majority to keep our streets tidy.”
The ordinance creates liability in any instance where a recorded image is obtained showing an occupant of a vehicle throwing or depositing litter from a vehicle. Litter is not only a blight on our neighborhoods, but a time and equipment intensive burden on the Department of Public Works which is a cost transmitted back to local taxpayers.
The ordinance was already adopted in the town of Yorktown and is intended to be used for cameras to be installed at littering “hot spots” to record driver’s licenses plates. Even without installing the cameras, Yorktown was successfully able to prosecute one litter bug when a concerned citizen took a video of the act and captured the offender’s license plate.
The item was adopted 4-3. It now heads to the Mayor’s desk for his signature.

POLL: Should the Tappan Zee Be Renamed After Mario Cuomo?

WESTCHESTER MAGAZINE: After the Assembly green lighted a bill which included a measure to rename the bridge, the Senate gave final approval. What do you think? Take our poll.

The Senate gave final approval Thursday afternoon on legislation that includes a measure to rename the currently under-construction Tappan Zee Bridge after Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s late father Mario Cuomo.

The proposal to rename the new bridge The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge was part of a 72-page bill that included measures to extend more than $1.8 billion in local taxes and alter a Lake Ontario flood-relief package.

The late Cuomo was governor from 1983 to 1994 and died in 2015.

The younger Cuomo has prided himself on seeing through the construction of the new bridge despite push back due to the $4 billion cost. He urged lawmakers to rename the still-under-construction Hudson River span as well as a park and a highway.

There are mixed feelings about renaming the bridge after the late Cuomo. It is currently named after former Gov. Malcolm Wilson, whose name was added to the bridge in 1994 upon the 20th anniversary of his leaving the governor's office, making its official name

PRESS RELEASE: Tompkins Mahopac Bank Opens Branch-of-the Future in Yonkers

YONKERS – Tompkins Mahopac Bank announces the opening of its state-of-the-art branch in the newly restored and historic Boyce Thompson Center, 1086 N. Broadway, Yonkers, New York.

A ribbon cutting will celebrate the opening on July 12.

Unlike conventional banks with glassed-in tellers and a roped-off waiting line, Tompkins’ branch-of-the-future features a universal banker that assists customers on-the-spot, whether that means making a deposit, taking out a loan, directing the person to a nearby tablet for information or otherwise providing assistance.

The public is encouraged to participate in Tompkins Mahopac Banks community coin-drop before and during the ribbon cutting, when the proceeds will be matched by the bank and donated via a large check presentation to Westhab, a large nonprofit that provides affordable housing and supportive services in Westchester County.

As well, a lucky winner will be chosen for a Yonkers’ Experience package, including restaurant and limousine service gift cards, plus a $500 MasterCard shopping spree gift card.

The Tompkins branch’s innovative concept was drawn, in part, from Tompkins’ 2016 Millennial Survey, which showed the generation valued the convenient location of a bank, plus the ability to conduct banking business at a branch and online, among other findings.

“Providing top-line customer service is at the center of what we do,” said Gerald J. Klein, Jr., president and chief executive officer of Tompkins Mahopac Bank.
“Our commitment to conveniently, effectively and supremely filling our customer’s banking needs means listening to their banking preferences in how we connect with them and do business.”
