PRESS RELEASE: Liam McLaughlin endorsed by League of Conservation Voters

YONKERS, NY – City Council President Liam McLaughlin continues to build a commanding lead in his bid for re-election which was endorsed by the New York State League of Conservation Voters today.

The NYLCV is the only statewide environmental organization in New York that fights for clean water, clean air, renewable energy and open space through political action and is non-partisan, pragmatic and effective.

In granting the endorsement, Josh Klainberg, senior vice-president of the New York State League of Conservation Voters wrote, “NYLCV and its partners in the environmental policy arena believe that voters [in Yonkers] are determined to make the environment a top voting issue in 2017. We look forward to working with Council President McLaughlin for a greater and greener New York!”
Council President McLaughlin has burnished impressive environmental credentials during his time on the City Council, where he serves as chair of the Environmental Protection & Policy Committee.
He has authored and passed numerous pieces of legislation including creating a director of sustainability and an environmental purchasing program to green the City’s procurement, creating a Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing program alongside EnergizeNY, creating the City’s “Complete Streets” ordinance and requiring the use of ecofriendly deicing agents on City roads. He also funded important environmental initiatives including a municipal tree study, a recent suggestion by the Green City Advisory Committee.
“My commitment to the environment has not only been through legislation, it has also included the launch of a new anti-litter marketing initiative and ‘Respect Yonkers’ campaign, the anti-litter poster contest and my legislation enacting tough new penalties for littering and dumping and creating litter cameras,” McLaughlin said. “During my time on the Council I have also been a champion for the planning, approval and construction of the Daylighting of the Saw Mill River at each and every phase. All of this has been accomplished working in a bipartisan fashion cooperatively with our Mayor.”
Also on the environmental front, in June of 2016, Council President McLaughlin became one of the first municipal officials to publicly oppose the United States Coast Guard’s recently abandoned proposal to allow for ten new commercial vessel anchorages along our waterfront on the Hudson River. He helped lead the charge by creating the #BantheBarges campaign with Mayor Mike Spano and the Hudson River Waterfront Alliance which garnered over 10,000 public comments in opposition to the plan.
“I’m honored to have partnered with the League of Conservation Voters on many important environmental initiatives and so grateful for their confidence in me. I’d like to thank them for all their help and advice and their noble work in educating the public on how we can leave our planet a little bit better for future generations,” McLaughlin concluded.
