PRESS RELEASE: Congressman Engel Statement on The President’s Nomination of Neil Gorsuch for The Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, D.C. — January 31, 2017 — Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement on the President’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court Justice:
“Tonight, the President shocked no one by picking Neil Gorsuch, a Supreme Court nominee with a regressive record who could only appeal to the furthest reaches of the extreme right-wing
“Conservative ideologues will laud this pick, as it represents everything they have come to stand for— an anti-women, anti-civil rights, pro-gun agenda that can only serve to turn back the clock on American progress. The addition of Gorsuch to our highest court could spell doom for a woman’s right to choose, worker’s rights, gun safety, environmental protections, voting rights, and a whole host of other safeguards that protect working Americans.
“The pick is even more troubling when you remember what happened to Merrick Garland, a highly qualified jurist who drew universal praise from across the political spectrum. Senate Republicans stonewalled his nomination for a year – not for any legitimate reason, but just to deny President Obama his right to appoint a Supreme Court Justice. Their conduct was disgusting, and the abdication of their Constitutional duty set a precedent that I believe should not soon be forgotten. Senate Democratswould be wise to remember the example their Republican colleagues set when it comes to the Supreme Court nominating process.”

YONKERS, NY — January 19, 2017 — 11:23pm - The Yonkers Fire Department was dispatched to 1200 Warburton Avenue. Neighbors had noticed smoke from their respective apartment. It was that call that spurred the first arriving Engine Co. 308 to shortly arrive thereafter. Upon arrival, Engine 308 defined circumstances as a structure fire and began immediate suppression and rescue efforts.
Battalion 1 was next to arrive confirming the structure fire. Battalion 1 was next to arrive. Assistant Fire Chief Eric Dronzek would serve as the incident commander.
Engine 308 found a female victim in the hallway; removed her to the courtyard of the building so as to safely administer medical attention to her benefit.

Additional companies found a male victim in the bedroom of an apartment and likewise removed from the suffocating smoke to the safety the courtyard.
Both victims were tended to by YFD and Empress Ambulance, thereafter transported to a nearby hospital for additional medical attention. Their status in not yet known.
The fire was brought under control and did not spread to adjacent apartments.

PRESS RELEASE: New York State Comptroller DiNapoli Asserts School District Tax Levy Growth to Remain Below 2 Percent

ALBANY, NY — January 18, 2017 — Property tax levy growth for school districts will be capped at 1.26 percent for the 2017-18 fiscal year, according to data released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The latest calculation affects the tax cap calculations for 677 school districts as well as 10 cities, including the “Big Four” cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Yonkers.
“For the fourth consecutive year, school and municipal officials will need to plan around a tax cap below two percent,” said DiNapoli. “My audits have shown some school districts will be able to rely on ample rainy day funds to offset the low growth in revenue, but others must examine their budgets to determine where they can limit spending or cut costs in order to stay under the cap.”
The tax cap, which first applied to local governments and school districts in 2012, limits tax levy increases to the lesser of the rate of inflation or 2 percent with certain exceptions, including a provision that allows school districts to override the cap with 60 percent voter approval of their budget.
Last year, school districts and the 10 cities of Amsterdam, Auburn, Buffalo, Corning, Long Beach, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown, White Plains and Yonkers, experienced the lowest allowable tax levy growth since the law was implemented – a cap of 0.12 percent.
For the list of allowable tax levy growth factors for all local governments, visit: http://www.osc.state.ny.us/localgov/realprop/pdf/inflation_allowablegrowthfactors.pdf
For access to state and local government spending, public authority financial data and information on 50,000 state contracts, visit Open Book New York. The easy-to-use website was created by DiNapoli to promote openness in government and provide taxpayers with better access to the financial workings of government.

PRESS RELEASE: Partial Roof Collapse at National Wholesale Liquidators Situated in Yonkers

YONKERS, NY
— January 11, 2017 —
Today at approximately 11:45am, the Yonkers Police Department Communications Division received numerous calls of a partial roof collapse at 798 Central Park Avenue, which is currently occupied by National Wholesale Liquidators at the Cross County Mall. Upon arrival, numerous Yonkers Police Department and Yonkers Fire Department units assisted in evacuating shoppers and employees from the store and the immediate parking lot area from the front of the store. Five non-life threatening injuries were reported at the scene, all victims were transported to area hospitals.
Initial investigation has revealed that a construction vehicle, described as a “Bobcat” type vehicle, was being operated on the roof of National Wholesale Liquidators. The roof at this location was also previously used as a parking structure. At some point, the construction vehicle fell through the parking structure and through the roof of National Wholesale Liquidators and into the store. The operator of the construction vehicle was one of the five persons who was injured and treated at a local hospital.
A search was conducted by the Yonkers Police Emergency Service Unit and Yonkers Fire Department personnel for any additional victims. No additional victims were located, but a complete search could not be conducted in the immediate area of the construction vehicle due to structural safety issues inside of the store caused by the collapse. There are no known unaccounted for or missing persons believed to be inside of the store at this time. Anyone requesting additional information can call the YPD Communications Division at 914-377-7900.
The Yonkers Police Department and Yonkers Fire Department will continue to have a presence at the location until necessary structural repairs are made in order to safely search the remaining areas inside of the store. Private contractors will be responding to the scene to make the necessary repairs to safeguard the property. One lane of traffic is closed on the northbound side of Central Park Avenue to allow for emergency vehicles which remain at the scene.

PRESS RELEASE: Defendants from Yonkers and The Bronx Charrged in Manhattan Federal Court with Narcatics Distribution and Firearms Possession

NEW YORK, NY — January 7, 2017 — Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, James P. O’Neill, the Commissioner of the New York City Police Department (“NYPD”), Ashan M. Benedict, the Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (“ATF”), and James J. Hunt, the Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”), announced the unsealing of an Indictment charging 14 defendants with participation in narcotics and firearms offenses in the Bronx and Yonkers. The Indictment also charges four of these defendants with participating in robberies of commercial establishments in The Bronx and Manhattan, and three of these defendants for participating in firearms trafficking.
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said: “As alleged, the defendants arrested today plagued The Bronx and Yonkers with drug dealing, guns, and commercial robberies. Thanks to the outstanding and cooperative efforts of the ATF, NYPD, and DEA, the defendants’ rash of alleged crimes has been brought to an end.”
NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill said: “The 14 defendants in this case face drug and gun charges after a multi-year investigation into the heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana trade in The Bronx and Yonkers. Four of the defendants are charged in connection with armed robberies in The Bronx and Manhattan and three are accused of firearms trafficking. Our neighborhoods are safer with these people – and the drugs and guns – off of our streets. I want to thank the US Attorney for the Southern District, Preet Bharara, Ashan Benedict, Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the ATF, James Hunt, Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the DEA, and the members of the NYPD for their contributions to this investigation.”
ATF SAC Ashan M. Benedict said: “Today’s indictment demonstrates the dangerous intersection between firearms trafficking, narcotics trafficking, the illicit possession and use of firearms, and violent crime. These defendants allegedly engaged in an alphabet soup of criminal activity, spreading poison, fear, and violence in their wake. Thanks to the outstanding work of the Special Agents, Detectives, and prosecutors involved in this investigation, they will now face well-deserved justice for their alleged actions. I would like to extend my gratitude to the members of ATF, DEA, NYPD, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their hard work and collaboration in putting a stop to these individuals.”
DEA SAC James J. Hunt said: “As alleged, a violent drug crew has been taken off the streets today. For years, they allegedly acted like outlaws; selling drugs, brandishing guns and robbing businesses like they were in a time warped Wild West movie. But reality hit them today when they were arrested and brought to court.”
The Indictment[1] charges 10 defendants with participating in a narcotics conspiracy based in the vicinity of Decatur Avenue and East 194th and 195th Streets in The Bronx, New York. Specifically, the following defendants – RENE RUIZ, a/k/a “Lil’ Rene,” a/k/a “Nae Nae,” WILFREDO GONZALEZ, a/k/a “Alfredo Gonzalez,” a/k/a “Freddy,” DOMINGO RAMOS, a/k/a “Mingo,” JASON POLANCO, a/k/a “Jin,” AMAR AHMED, a/k/a “Omar,” a/k/a “O,” ZAIE ESCRIBANO, a/k/a “Zaieto,” a/k/a “Z,” JAIME GONZALEZ, a/k/a “Jimbo,” JORDAN MCDONALD, a/k/a “Umi,” EDWARD NELSON, a/k/a “Boo,” a/k/a “Bugatti,” and CHRISTOPHER CORREA, a/k/a “Chris” – are charged with conspiring to distribute, and to possess with intent to distribute, heroin, crack cocaine, and marijuana from about 2011 up to about early 2017. In addition, all four defendants are charged with the use, carrying, and possession of firearms during and in relation to the robbery conspiracy and the November 2014 gas station robbery, during which a firearm was brandished and discharged.

The defendants who were taken into custody will be presented and arraigned in Manhattan federal court this afternoon before Magistrate Judge James L. Cott. Five defendants are presently detained in either state or federal custody on unrelated charges, and are being brought into federal custody on writs (RUIZ, POLANCO, ESCRIBANO, JAIME GONZALEZ, and MCDONALD). Three defendants remain at large (WILFREDO GONZALEZ, NELSON, and RUSSELL). The case is assigned to U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain.
Mr. Bharara thanked the Westchester County Police Department and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.
The prosecution is being handled by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crime Unit and its White Plains Division. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justina L. Geraci, Jordan L. Estes, Christopher J. Clore, and Amanda L. Houle are in charge of the prosecution.
The charges contained in the superseding Indictment are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

PRESS RELEASE: Yonkers High School Robotics Team to Compete Under the Leadership of Adam Thiesen, Physics Teacher, and Andrea Pannell, Calculus Teacher, in New Hudson Valley Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition

New Hudson Valley Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition Launches at Rockland Community College with Kickoff of 2017 FIRST® Robotics Competition Season
New Engineering Competition Offers Geographically Convenient Option for Hudson Valley High School Students to Design and Build Robots to Compete in Exciting Sports-like Tournament

SUFFERN, NY — January 6, 2017 — As inventor and FIRST® Founder Dean Kamen launched the 2017 FIRST® Robotics Competition season today, FIRST® NYC announced that it is sponsoring the inaugural Hudson Valley Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, an exciting sports-like tournament with 47 competing high school teams of future technologists and entrepreneurs, to take place from March 24 – 26, 2017, at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York. This exciting event is free and open to the public.
“Because the Hudson Valley Regional (HVR) will be based in the lower-Hudson Valley, we are opening up a new geographically convenient option for students who want another competition venue that sits between FIRST® NYC and FIRST® Tech Valley, located further north in the Capitol District,” said Pat Daly, Regional Director, FIRST® NYC.
Each year’s FIRST® Robotics Competition is designed around a particular theme challenge. At today’s internationally broadcast kickoff from FIRST® headquarters in Manchester, New Hampshire, teams participating in the new HVR competition gathered at New Rochelle High School to watch the live broadcast where they were shown the FIRST® STEAMWORKS℠ game field and challenge details for the first time. At the kickoff, each team received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, control system components, construction materials, and a mix of additional automation components – with limited instructions. Working with adult Mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in one or more of the 145 Regional and District events that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.
“We are particularly excited to cheer on our five hometown teams from Westchester, Putnam and Rockland County,” said Daly. “We hope the competition will spur greater interest from local students in robotics, prompting school systems to incorporate these programs into their after-school activities. Training and experience received by FIRST alumni positions them for careers in science, technology and engineering – all areas critical to the Hudson Valley economy.”
Yonkers High School Mechadogs
Team 5123, the Yonkers High School Mechadogs, formed in 2013, first competed in 2014. The team was founded by physics teacher Adam Thiessen, at the request of several of the school’s students. The team grew rapidly in demand among the student body, annually having more than 70 applicants. With demand evolved an objective and arduous selection process to keep the team at a logistically necessary cap of 37 members. In our third year, calculus teacher Andrea Pannell, joined in to support the team, serving as coach with Mr. Thiessen. The team has won several awards over the 3 seasons it has competed and student member STEM acuity has snowballed as it grows and is passed vertically down to new members. The team participates in numerous outreach activities promoting STEM in the community, and facilitates summer programs in robotics for local youth at the Yonkers Police Athletic League. This past June 2016, the team hosted it’s first invitational, the Hudson Valley Rally. We look forward to the continued growth of the nascent relationship we have developed with other Hudson Valley teams. Our partnerships with local businesses and organizations such as Con Edison, trendGit, and the Yonkers Police Athletics League, and support from YHS PTSA have given the students of YHS an amazing opportunity to explore STEM careers, as a majority of our graduates have chosen further pursuits in this professional arena.
The community is encouraged to attend this free event. For more information, visit www.nycfirst.org/nycfirst-events/hudson-valley-regional. Parents, prospective mentors and students interested in getting involved or starting a team to compete in 2018, may direct email to: frcteams@firstinspires.or, and visit: http://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc/start-a-team
