YONKERS RISING: Tough as Nails Yonkers Cop Recovering from Shooting


Dan Murphy: A Yonkers police officer walked out of Jacobi Hospital one day after getting shot in the face after an ambush during a routine traffic stop Monday.

Yonkers: Police Officer Kayla Maher, 26, who has served two years on the job with the Yonkers Police Department, comes from a family of law enforcement and was welcomed outside of the hospital by a sea of blue police officers who applauded her miraculous recovery and her bravery.

The shootout occurred Sept. 25 at about 8 p.m. on Marshall Road at Ridge Drive, in the Park Hill neighborhood of the city in the Third Police Precinct. Maher and her partner were called to the scene for a report of a suspicious vehicle occupied by two suspects.

Upon arrival, one of the suspects, identified as 18-year-old Frank Valencia of New Rochelle.....
