YONKERS, NY – October 6, 2017 – Mayor Spano this week joined members of Yonkers City Council, Board of Education Trustees, President of the Board of Education, Rev. Steve Lopez, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada and Yonkers Federation of Teachers President Samantha Rosado-Ciriello to present the School of the Month Award for September 2017 to the deserving administration, faculty, staff, parents and students at Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy. Under the leadership of Principal Natalie Davy, Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy is achieving great success with their Science, Technology, Education, Arts and Mathematics program (STEAM). The implementation of STEAM led to an increase in school testing scores over the course of the last three years.
In addition, Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy has been engaged in community partnerships, working in conjunction with the Police Athletic League, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Arts Westchester, JCY-Westchester Community Partners, Westchester Community Counseling Services and the Black United Fund of NY. These different programs have offered vital support services to the students – promoting cognitive learning skills and enhanced methods of learning.
“Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy, under the leadership of Principal Natalie Davy, is setting the bar with community engagement,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “The administrators, teachers and staff should be proud of the work they’ve accomplished thus far – exposing our young ones to diverse experiences at an early age is something that is crucial to their early childhood development. By affording our students the opportunity to find their passion, through the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics program, we’re cultivating a learning environment that they want to come to each and every day.”
“The progressive social, emotional and academic growth of the students as well as the availability of health services at Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy is a magnificent example of the value of the community school model. Principal Davy fosters relationships among the entire learning community and the beneficiaries are the students,” noted Dr. Edwin M. Quezada, Superintendent of Schools.
Board of Education President Rev. Steve Lopez praised the students, families, teachers, staff and community organizations, “this school exemplifies the Board’s goal for stakeholder involvement and engagement. Through this goal we work to develop an infrastructure to support student success. Everyone at Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy’s is doing a great job, especially the children.”
Mayor Spano’s School of the Month recognition program began in January 2014 as a way to celebrate the significant academic success, extracurricular achievements and community volunteerism of Yonkers’ students, teachers, administration and staff at Yonkers Public Schools.
