JOURNAL NEWS: Astorino, Latimer to meet in first of three debates

The incumbent Rob Astorino backed out of a debate scheduled for Oct. 30 and sponsored by the League of Women Voters.

WHITE PLAINS - Incumbent Rob Astorino will face challenger George Latimer on Tuesday night in the first of three debates ahead of the November election for Westchester County executive.

Astorino, a Republican seeking his third term in office, and Latimer, a Democrat serving in the state Senate, will field questions at the Reckson Center on Hamilton Avenue during a debate sponsored by the member organization the Business Council of Westchester.

A fourth debate scheduled at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry had been agreed to by both candidates, but Astorino backed out of that debate last week. His campaign said they had wanted a Yonkers location for that final debate.

The other debates scheduled are

Oct. 24, Iona College Murphy Auditorium, 715 North Ave., New Rochelle. 6-8 p.m. Sponsored by The Journal News/lohud and FiOS1 News.

Oct. 26, News12 broadcast on television.

Latimer’s camp has called for more debates, but Astorino’s spokesman has said for several months that the campaign would plan for three head-to-head debates.

“When I’ve been an incumbent, I’ve debated,” Latimer said. “As a challenger, I’ve debated. I’m willing to debate this year as many times as can be realistically put on the schedule.”.......
