TODAY IN YONKERS HISTORY: December 9th

Dec. 9, 1916: Capt. A. C. Anson, popularly known as “Pop” Anson, appeared at a local Yonkers theater. A first baseman, Anson was the first captain of the Chicago White Stockings and was the only man to have maintained a batting average of 0.356 for 22 years, arguably being the first to tally more than 3,000 career hits. He led to the team to five National League Pennants in the 1880s. His appearances in vaudeville usually involved a monologue, written by George Cohan, and a dance.
