TODAY IN YONKERS HISTORY: December 11th

Dec. 11, 1926: Ignoring threats against his life if he continued his crusade against gambling and “speakeasies” in Yonkers, Public Safety Commissioner William Cameron raided two more gambling places in south Yonkers.

Dec. 11, 1927: Caleb Dula, president of P. Lorillard Tobacco Company, donated $200,000 to the endowment fund for Duke University under construction at Durham, N.C. The school was named after and founded by his friend James Duke. Dula’s estate Lenoir was on North Broadway, now owned by Westchester County
