Suspect Dies After Ingesting Unknown Substance Prior to Arrest

Town of Greenburgh Police Chief Chris McNerney reports that on Thursday evening just before 6 p.m. patrol officers responded to a larceny in progress at Best Buy store located at 299 North Central Avenue.
As units were responding and receiving updates on the location of the suspect, officers observed Best Buy employees and store security struggling with an individual on the ground at Webb Field (close to intersection of Havard Dr. and North Central Ave).
As Officers attempted to gain control of the suspect, they deployed a taser and handcuffed him.
Chief McNerney stated Best Buy employees alerted officers the suspect ingested an unknown substance prior to their struggle.
At that time the suspect began to lose consciousness and was immediately treated by officers and EMS personnel on the scene.
The suspect went into cardiac arrest while being transported to the hospital yet EMS continued desperate attempts to resuscitate the suspect with CPR and advance life support, McNerney said.
The suspect, who McNerney identified as 21-year-old Jonathan Maldonado of Yonkers, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Greenburgh Police requested the assistance of the City of Yonkers Police Department for an independent law enforcement investigation.

Three officers involved in the arrest were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and were released. They have been placed on modified duty.
