LAWYERS: Police “violently mishandled the situation” in Greenburgh man’s death
YONKERS - The family of a man who died in police custody in Greenburgh is expected to speak out today.
Family members of Jonathan Maldonado will be holding a news conference outside the Sinatra Memorial Funeral Home in Yonkers before a private family viewing of his body.
Police say Maldonado, 21, died last week in police custody after allegedly stealing a cellphone from the Best Buy in Hartsdale.
Greenburgh police officers tasered him moments before he went into cardiac arrest. He later died at the hospital.
Lawyers for his family are calling for a full and fair investigation. They say officers picked Maldonado up and slammed him face down to the ground where two to three officers sat on his back before tasering him. They are accusing police of "violently mishandling the situation.”.....
