YONKERS - Juan Aguilar decided to open El Calvario Mexican restaurant downtown because he sees a bright future
By Ernie Garcia
"My idea was to open near all the new projects that are opening around here," said Aguilar, who also owns La Chinita Poblana restaurant in Irvington. "The idea is to bring something new to downtown Yonkers."
El Calvario opened April 29 and patrons have already identified their favorites. Aguilar, who grew up in the Mexican state of Puebla, said one popular dish is his alambres mixtos, $15, grilled skewers mixed with chicken, steak, shrimp, peppers, cheese and other ingredients.
Another crowd-pleaser is his camarones a la diabla, $22, pan seared shrimp, sauteed mushrooms, onions, peppers, cilantro and a guajillo-chipotle sauce that's served with rice and beans......
