PRESS RELEASE: State Assessment Results Show Continuous Gains

Yonkers Ahead of Statewide and Big 5 Cities Results
English Language Arts increased by 4.2 percentage points
Mathematics increased by 3.7 percentage points
YONKERS: Over the five (5) years of the Common Core Standards, Yonkers Public Schools continues its gains in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada noted, “Really good work is happening in every school.

Our challenge is institutionalizing sustainable solutions for student success in 2017-2018 and beyond.

Research indicates that attaining higher levels of student achievement cannot be accomplished in a year or two.  It requires years of quality data-driven instruction, sustained targeted professional development, as well as student academic, social and emotional supports.  And, that requires stable reoccurring revenue and support commitments from all stakeholders to urban education, to Yonkers Public Schools.”
According to Dr. Quezada, “What we now know from the data informs why we need to raise achievement outcomes for all students.  The work is how we accomplish this in 2017-2018.  Our immediate action is a school-by-school analysis, examining subgroup results to realign professional development and student supports.  Priority one is to continually improve instruction in every school, in every classroom, every day.”
Board of Education President Rev. Steve Lopez noted, “Today’s release of the State assessments clearly demonstrates the steady academic progress our students have made over the past two years.  These results are a testament to the work and commitment of our administrators, teachers and support staff, and more important, the hard work by our students with the support of their families.  The Trustees commend Dr. Quezada and his team.”
Yonkers student achievement outcomes on the State assessments continue to improve districtwide for students at or above proficiency (levels 3 & 4): English Language Arts (ELA) increased by 4.2 percentage points and Mathematics increased by 3.7 percentage points; outperforming the State which gained 1.9 percentage points on ELA and 1.1 points on Mathematics.  On both assessments every subgroup in Yonkers showed improvements. Also, Yonkers achievement outperformed the Big 5 City School Districts percentage point increases on both assessments.
Districtwide grade level growth shows significant increases: in ELA grades 6 is up 4.5 percentage points, grade 7 is up 5.0 points and grade 8 made the largest gains up 8.8 percentage points from last year.  In Mathematics, significant grade level gains show in grade 3 up 8.7 percentage points and grade 6 up 5.3 points.
