YONKERS - What started 75 years ago in a basement as an after-school program for children has evolved into a multi-million-dollar agency that serves thousands.
On Friday, staff, clients and supporters of the Nepperhan Community Center will celebrate the agency's evolution as they look to the future.
"Our agency has basically tried to adapt to the needs of our children and the family over the years, so that now we have become a multi-faceted agency that provides holistic services to the children and the families, and not just in Yonkers. We now have offices in the Lower Hudson Valley," said Jim Bostic, the center's executive director since 2004.
The center began in a community room at 13 Monroe St., an area once called Nepperhan but is today known at Runyon Heights.
The agency moved a few times to 117 Palisade Ave. and 295 Warburton Ave. before arriving in 1981 at its current location at 342 Warburton Ave., a former supermarket.
Today the center has a paid full- and part-time staff of about 160, some 100 volunteers and an annual budget in the range of $4 million.
The center serves about 5,000 children and their families a week with sports, education and social-service programs t.....
